In today’s constant search for individuality, Jimena Johnston looks for a universal identity. Her inspiration comes from artist Min Peng’s statement: ‘Normally we think a person should have only one standpoint, but when you become a bridge you have two.’ She translates the idea of “Man as a Bridge” with repetition. By painting the same figure over and over, the process becomes a mirror of the painting. This play in repetition aims to strip down differences of culture, gender, race and other categories. Each repetition becomes a new standpoint; each standpoint gives way to the possibility of finding our true Self.
Jimena Johnston is a visual artist from Mexico. Her chosen medium is acrylic, which she uses in combination with charcoal and cut-outs from newspaper and magazines to create layers of mixed media on canvas.
