In today’s constant search for individuality, Jimena Johnston looks for a universal identity. Her inspiration comes from artist Min Peng’s statement: ‘Normally we think a person should have only one standpoint, but when you become a bridge you have two.’ She translates the idea of “Man as a Bridge” with repetition. By painting the same figure over and over, the process becomes a mirror of the painting. This play in repetition aims to strip down differences of culture, gender, race and other categories. Each repetition becomes a new standpoint; each standpoint gives way to the possibility of finding our true Self.

Jimena Johnston is a visual artist from Mexico. Her chosen medium is acrylic, which she uses in combination with charcoal and cut-outs from newspaper and magazines to create layers of mixed media on canvas. The figure is the central theme of her work. In today’s constant search for individuality, Jimena looks for a universal identity.
